Munns Sly Moore Architects were engaged to develop the design and
documentation for the refurbishment of part of the former Flynn Primary
School into a 115 place Childcare Centre. The conversion also required the
construction of a “link building” serving as the new entry to the centre
opened in 2012.
The original school was designed by celebrated architect Dr Enrico Taglietti, and is generally regarded as a good example of the late 20th century organicstyle. Although not formally recognized or listed, the heritage significance ofthe building, and strong connections with the local community required ameasured approach to the architecture of the new building, including identification and incorporation of culturally significant elements.
Extensive stakeholder consultation was conducted with the original architect, heritage architect, childcare operators, childcare regulation unit, client andcommunity groups to deliver the optimum response with consideration of the original school buildings, timeline and budget. The project delivered a flagship centre for the realization of what was then the new National Quality Framework for Childcare Centers which was in the process of being phased in across the country.
The second phase of the work has involved the conversion of the remainder of the buildings at the school into a Community Hub, office, meeting and resource spaces opened in late 2013. This work has included the upgrade of amenities, services and access to meet contemporary standards and the requirements of the Building Code of Australia.
